Step L10: Buttstock Installation
Objective: In Step L10 of lower receiver assembly, we will install the buttstock onto the receiver extension.
NOTE: This step is not applicable if building a pistol. Don’t even think about it. If you haven’t already done so, please read NFA and Prison.
Tools Required
1: Screwdriver may be required for installation of a carbine buttstock. Rifle buttstock may require a flathead screwdriver to install the buttstock mounting screw.

Step L10.0: Remove Existing Buttstock (replacement/upgrade only)
If you are replacing your existing buttstock (or need to remove the buttstock for any other reason), first ensure the firearm is unloaded.
Determine how the buttstock is held in place.
For rifles, you will generally need to remove the buttstock mounting screw. This will typically require you to remove or shift the butt plate out of the way, and may require either a hex wrench or flat head screwdriver. Once the mounting screw is removed, slide the buttstock off of the rifle receiver extension.
For carbines, you will typically pull down on the adjustment lever and slide the buttstock off of the carbine receiver extension.
Step L10.1: Prepare the Buttstock
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for preparation of the buttstock for installation on the receiver extension.
Step L10.2: Slide the Buttstock onto the Receiver Extension
Carbine: Extend the release lever on the buttstock downward as you slip the buttstock onto the receiver extension. For some buttstocks, you may need to use a screwdriver to pry the release lever during installation.
Rifle: Slide the buttstock over the receiver extension. If you are building an AR-15 or AR-9 rifle, carefully compress the pivot/takedown spring for the takedown pin as you seat the buttstock fully. Be sure to align the index “button” with the depression in the lower receiver.
Step L10.3: Install the Buttstock Mounting Screw (rifle only)
Thread the buttstock mounting screw through the rear of the buttstock and into the rear of the receiver extension. Note that you may need to adjust or remove the buttstock end plate to access the hole.
Hand tighten the buttstock screw.
