In this article, we introduce the science of ballistics.

Internal Ballistics

In this article, we will dig into internal ballistics.  As we do, we will identify and characterize all of the variables that impact the bullet and it’s flight, before it leaves the gun.

External Ballistics

In this article, we dissect external ballistics.  We will introduce the concepts and types of stabilizing forces and destabilizing forces that are inherent to or act upon the bullet in flight.  We will look at how the design of the bullet can have dramatic impact on external ballistics.

 

Terminal Ballistics

In this article, we will explore terminal ballistics.  We will cover all of the considerations for things that happen to your bullet and a target when they meet.  We will look at how the design of the bullet determines what happens when bullet meets target.

 

History of the Rifle

In this article, we will explore the history of the rifle, including the weapons systems that inspired it and the impacts that it has had on the world.

The Science of Twist

In this article, we will review the basic principles of rifling.  We will then venture into a detailed exploration of the science of gyroscopic stabilization.

Spin Drift and Muzzle Jump

In this article, we explore the Magnus Effect and its impacts on a bullet’s trajectory.  Most know this phenomenon as muzzle jump and spin drift.

Coriolis and Eotvos

In this article, we explore the phenomena of coriolis and eotvos.  By the end, you will understand how the rotation of the Earth affects long range ballistics.

Bullet Velocity

In this article, we look at the effect of projectile velocity on the flight of the bullet.

Environmental Factors

In this article, we explore the extrinsic constants and variables that can act on the bullet along its flight path.  This includes air density (barometric pressure, temperature, humidity), wind, precipitation, and gravity.
