Lower Component Reviews
Buttstocks
The buttstock is one of the primary interfaces with the weapon system. As such, it has a big role in ergonomics and comfort, but also plays a big part in a shooter’s performance with the weapon.
Pistol Grips
The pistol grip is a major factor in fine motor control of the weapon system. Shape, material, and finish greatly influence ergonomics and the way you handle the gun.
Receiver Extensions
The receiver extension is a necessity on the AR platform. It often hides under a buttstock, so it gets less attention than it should. The right receiver extension can contribute to aesthetics and, more importantly, function of the weapon system.
Buffers and Springs
The buffering system comprised of the buffering mass and buffer spring is a critical component in the operating system of the weapon. It plays an important part in reliability, and should be tuned as part of the reciprocating mass and gas systems.
Triggers
The trigger is one of the most obvious and important interfaces with a gun. It sets everything in motion and can impact speed and accuracy of the gun.
Hammer/Trigger Pins
It may seem silly to dedicate an entire section to pins, but the trigger and hammer pins are an important hot-topic subject in the world of ARs. These seemingly-insignificant components play a huge role in reliability.
Safety Selectors
With firearms, safety is paramount. The safety selector is a small component of firearm safety (way behind mindset and behavior). This go/no-go component is an important control that should not be neglected.
Magazine Release Buttons
When you need to drop a mag (and you don’t live in California), the magazine release button suddenly becomes a component of interest. The ability to quickly locate and index to the button means you get back into the action faster.
Pivot/Takedown Pins
Pivot and takedown pins may be the most neglected visible component on the AR. Yet, you will use them every time you clean the gun, and may need to use them for troubleshooting and issue mitigation. Design and fit can have a big impact on the efficiency of their use, so choose wisely. They can be a pain in the giblets to change out, so choose wisely from the start.
